Every bespoke gown I create begins with a story, so I was thrilled to be asked to design two couture wedding dresses inspired by the classic gothic romance Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Arley House & Gardens in Worcestershire, the concept explored the changing moods of one of literature’s most unforgettable heroines, Catherine Earnshaw. I created not one, but two contrasting bridal looks to capture the beauty, romance and tragedy of her story.
The classic bridal gown
For Cathy’s first look, I wanted to design a contemporary couture wedding dress with historical influences. My aim was to create a gown that felt timeless and romantic while subtly referencing the early 19th century period the novel is set in.
The result was an ivory silk dupion two-piece gown, featuring a steel-boned corseted bodice, detachable statement puff sleeves and an off-the-shoulder neckline.
The sculpted draping of the outer skirt reveals a frothing tulle underlayer that brings lightness, texture and dramatic movement to the silhouette. An oversized bow at the back and sparkling crystal embellishments add a sense of theatre while maintaining the refined elegance of the design.
As with every couture gown I create, every detail was carefully considered to achieve the perfect balance between drama and sophistication.
Transforming the look
As Cathy’s story unfolds, the ivory gown was paired with a rich burgundy silk velvet capelet, adorned with a hand-crafted, heart shaped brooch. The additions completely transformed the mood of the outfit, introducing deep, dramatic tones that reflect the darker chapters of Cathy’s story while allowing the gown beneath to remain the centrepiece. It’s a wonderful example of how carefully chosen accessories can transform a bridal look without changing the dress itself.
An alternative bridal statement
The second look I created took the concept in a completely different direction. At its foundation the silhouette is formed by a panniered corset which accentuates the hips. With layers of ivory and black tulle, and a horizontal band of black lace tucked beneath the layers, this skirt is both multi-dimensional and exudes gothic romance. The waist is cinched by a wide-boned black satin belt sitting over the top of the corset which has a detachable organza portrait collar that wraps elegantly around the shoulders to frame the décolletage, and the addition of the organza bow completes this unmistakably dramatic gothic look.
Accessorised with French lace gloves and a sheer black veil, both made in-house, the addition of a velvet heart choker completes the outfit. The finished look represented Cathy’s final scenes, embracing the mystery and intensity of the novel.
Alternative wedding fashion continues to grow in popularity, and I love working with brides who want to express their individuality. Whether it’s subtle colour, dramatic accessories or a striking wedding dress, couture design allows every element to be tailored to the bride and her vision.
Couture tells a story
Editorial shoots like this are always inspiring because they remind us that a wedding dress can be so much more than beautiful. Through thoughtful design, fabric, silhouette and detail, it can communicate personality, emotion, history and tell a story.
I’m proud to have contributed the couture gowns for this stylish interpretation of Wuthering Heights, and I hope it inspires brides looking for something romantic, dramatic and entirely unique for their own wedding day.
